This week, parts of Michigan will likely experience extreme heat with temperatures reaching 100 degrees. When the humidity is factored in, the heat index will be well above 100 degrees. It hasn’t been this hot in Michigan since July 2012.

Stacey Hughes with Specialty Hybrids says the crops will likely benefit from the extreme heat by causing the plants to root down even further to find more moisture.

“I really think it’s going to help. I really think we are going to see those growth stages really take off [and] I think we’re going to get a lot of [growing degree units] here in a very short amount of time.”

In addition, Stacey stresses to Michigan farmers that a deadline  is fast approaching regarding soybean herbicides.

“We do have a cut off coming up for Xtendimax® [herbicide] in Michigan. Our deadline is July 1, so the next couple of weeks will be really important in regards to getting those applications in.”
