July is the Michigan Blueberry Commission’s favorite month—it’s National Blueberry Month.

Michigan’s nearly 600 blueberry farms produce an average of 92 million pounds, making them third in the country in terms of production.

Kevin Robson, executive director of the Michigan Blueberry Commission, is excited to celebrate the fruit.

“The Michigan Blueberry Commission has always been part of the National Blueberry Festival in South Haven—we always look forward to being part of that and getting out, doing field tours, and being on farms,” he said.

U-pick activity for the tasty blue fruit has started at some farms in the state. Robson said that’s one great way to show support.

“There’s definitely going to be some blueberries getting picked in the next month or so,” he said. “Grab your neighbors, family members and kids and go to a u-pick blueberry operation. It’s both therapeutic and fun.”

Your mental health might benefit from getting out in the fresh air and picking berries, but they also pack a punch for your physical health.

“Blueberries’ health benefits are positive—with antioxidants, they’re good for your brain and good for your heart,” he said. “A couple blueberries a day is a good choice. Look for those clamshells on your supermarket shelves for July, August and part of September for that ‘Grown in Michigan’ label. We look forward to bringing that fresh, high-quality, fair priced fruit to your supermarket near you.”
