Harvest Windows Aplenty in Upcoming Forecast

We have a good harvest window across Michigan the next few days. That according to MAT Chief Meteorologist Ryan Martin in his first Harvest Weather Forecast of the season brought to you by Seed Genetics Direct and Greenstone Farm Credit Services.

“We’re looking at sunshine, blue skies, good evaporation rates, and no major precipitation outbreaks between now and honestly, I think as we get into the early part of next week,” Martin explains. “We are seeing the remains of Hurricane Ian get no closer than southern Ohio, so I think high pressure dominates the landscape from now through the weekend and probably through next Tuesday.”

Martin says a cold front sweeps across the Great Lakes region overnight Tuesday and through Wednesday.

“At this point, yes, we have to put clouds and a little bit of moisture in our forecast. I think we’re looking at probably 60 percent coverage of moisture that runs from a few hundredths to maybe 3 tenths. We see a large part of that down in southern Lower Michigan as well, so this may be a brief pause in harvest. Not a big interruption, just a brief pause because we start to see clouds break up overnight Wednesday night into early Thursday already.”

As for temperatures, Martin’s forecast calls for significantly cooler air as we finish out next week.

“Thursday and Friday we’ll see well below normal temperatures with Canadian high pressure sitting right on top of us. That means we should see sunshine, but maybe not the fastest dry down potential. And we see another frontal complex wanting to come in for Saturday the 8th.  Again a few hundredths to maybe a tenth or two of moisture concentrating more on central and northern Michigan than down south, but clouds will be everywhere. Behind that, another cool surge to start the week of the 10th where we should be dry long term.”
