Dairy and beef producers can benefit from planting Enogen corn, which is a first-of-its kind variety from Syngenta.
Rebekah Shirley, Enogen account lead for Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, says this is the first time the company has placed an enzyme inside the seed itself.
“Energy in corn comes from an alpha amylase enzyme, which helps break down starch inside of the animal, and that leads to increased amounts of starch digestibility which leads to about 5 percent more feed efficiency in ruminant cattle,” she says.
She adds that Enogen is replacing corn products with a more feed efficient option.
“You’re already growing corn on your farm for your animals,” says Shirley. “Now you can get corn with an extra additive that will actually help their feed efficiency, help their digestibility.”
This fall when producers are considering their options for 2022, Shirley says Enogen should be a contender, based productivity.
“It is something that can help your farm be more profitable, help your animals be better on your farm,” she says. “At the end of the day, dairy farming is cost prohibitive right now—it’s a tight market. Anything we can do to make ourselves a little better to make those margins a little bit higher, is going to help our farm be productive and continue on in the future.”
