Even though we don’t have an update on harvest progress from USDA because of the ongoing government shutdown, Ashley Stickler, sales agronomist with Channel Seed serving northwestern Michigan, shares her estimates for harvest completion.

“Soybeans are around 90-to-93 percent completed, and we’re looking at wrapping that up this week,” she says. “As far as corn, were basically just getting started. I would give a rough estimate of about 10 percent finished on corn. Obviously, all the silage has been taken off, but actual grain corn, I would say about 10 percent completed.”

And how are yields looking so far?

“For soybeans, we were a little disappointed with yields. I would say they have been below average to average yields this year. We just didn’t get that rain in August to help with the crop,” she says.

“As far as corn, from what I’ve been hearing from all my customers yields, are good to above average.”

Ashley says her territory around the St. Johns area did get a little bit of rainfall earlier this week.

“We received about a half-inch where I’m located at north of Lansing, but we would sure take a lot more,” she says. “I know most of the state has been in a pretty good drought the whole year and we would definitely take some more rain—especially to finish up some soybean harvest because guys aren’t loving the 9-percent moisture on those soybeans, so if we could get a little bit more to finish up, I think everybody would be okay with that.”
