Moisture in the Upcoming Harvest Forecast

MAT Harvest

Mother Nature has been very cooperative with harvest this season, but she might throw a few curveballs our way this coming week.

Chief Meteorologist Ryan Martin says his Seed Genetics Direct Harvest Weather Forecast features some hit-and-miss scattered showers across the state on Friday.

“Mostly over the southern half of Lower Michigan,” Martin explains, “but I’m not going to rule things out anywhere. We’ll see up to half an inch of moisture with coverage at around 70% of the state. Cooler temperatures come in behind this as Canadian high pressure sits right on top of us for the entire weekend, Saturday and Sunday. I don’t want to say temperatures are too far below normal, but I think we’re going to get back closer to normal for this period.”

For next week, Martin says we’ll see some dry weather, but we don’t necessarily have a wide-open window either.

“We are sunny, warm and dry for Monday, and we are dry and very windy for Wednesday. Smack in the middle is Tuesday, where we are windy and warm, but I think that triggers a few hit-and-miss scattered showers coming across Lake Superior and down into Michigan, a few hundredths to a tenth or two. So, it’s not a wide open, dry stretch like some others in the east. I think we’re going to be dealing with that hit-and-miss activity there on Tuesday.”

And Halloween Thursday will not only be spooky, but it will also be rainy.

“I think we’re going to pick up anywhere from a quarter to one inch of precipitation. I think we miss out on the biggest thunderstorms. They stay farther to the west. A secondary surge of moisture from overnight Friday night through Saturday though has a better potential for thunderstorms, so another quarter to one and a half inches of rain is possible there. Coverage will be 100% of Michigan. Everybody gets wet and we cool down dramatically in drier air behind that for the 3rd and 4th.”

Martin will have those forecast details available in written form later Friday at michiganagtoday.com presented by Seed Genetics Direct and Greenstone Farm Credit Services.
