Harvest has just gotten underway in Michigan with 13 percent of corn and 17 percent of the state’s soybeans already harvested according to the USDA Crop Progress Report for Oct. 10.
Stacey Hughes with Hughes Seed Solutions—a Specialty Hybrids dealer serving Jackson County and southern Michigan—says corn yields look promising early this harvest season.
“Last week, there was some one-hundred day corn in the high 20’s [for moisture levels], so we’re getting there—just slowly but surely,” says Hughes.
“Quality could be an issue this year. We are seeing a lot of ear molds—specifically diplodia and gibberella in my area. Then, tar spot did come in, but it came in late so because of the timing. I don’t think it will affect the yield as much as it will affect the stalks, so let’s keep an eye on those fields and prioritize harvest,” says Hughes.
