HOS Exemption for Livestock Haulers Extended

Livestock haulers are getting some good news from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

The administration announced it is extending the exemption from hours-of-service (HOS) requirements to continue through midnight on November 30, 2021.

HOS regulate the maximum amount of time drivers are permitted to be on duty, including driving time, and specifies number and length of rest periods to ensure drivers stay awake and alert. In general, all carriers and drivers operating commercial motor vehicles must comply with HOS regulations.

The exemptions for livestock haulers have been in place since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing for flexibility to ensure a strong supply chain, and the wellbeing of livestock when being transported.

“Farm Bureau, along with a coalition of partners has strongly advocated for these exemptions since the beginning of the pandemic,” said John Kran, Michigan Farm Bureau national legislative counsel.

“Extending HOS exemptions has helped livestock producers in Michigan, and across the country, maintain a strong supply of food to families when they need it most.”
