The Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) is getting ready to kick off the 22nd National Farmers Market Week on Sunday August 1. According to Hailey Lamb, communications manager, this year’s celebration is even more appreciated.

“In 2020, farmers markets were all about the essentials and how to get shoppers in and out safely,” she said. “We’re excited to welcome things like live music, children’s activities, and food sampling. Those are all welcome back with open arms this summer and certainly this National Farmers Market Week.”

Michigan is home to more than 250 farmers markets, and more than 98 percent of Michiganders live in a county with at least one farmers market. Time and time again, they’ve proven essential.

“Imagine trying to feed a family of four on a budget of food assistance benefits and you get to go to the farmers market down the road to stretch your food dollars on in-season produce with your Bridge Card and Double Up Food Bucks,” said Lamb. “Or imagine being a new farmer trying to establish your business and reach customers and earn a living for your family. For both of these individuals, the purpose of a market looks really different, but it represents access and helps protect and feed their families.”

They also represent economic impact, food access, farm viability, health, and so many more things. Lamb said they’re a cornerstone of communities.

“The interactions and atmosphere of a farmers market really anchors a market as a community gathering space for all people to join, gather, and really celebrate local food,” she added.

The best way to celebrate National Farmers Market Week is to go and shop at your local market. Need help finding it? Check out the map here.
