Reports of Armyworms, Soil Crusting Affecting Michigan Crops

Corn leaf damage caused by armyworm larva.

So far in Michigan, 80 percent of the expected corn crop has been planted according to the USDA’s Weekly Crop Progress Report for the week ending Sunday, May 29, 2022.  Of the corn crop planted throughout the state, 47 percent has emerged.

The USDA also says that 60 percent of the expected soybean crop has been planted at this time with 33 percent of the crop emerged.

Dan Cable, Field Sales Representative with Specialty Hybrids, says there have been reports of armyworms found among Michigan’s corn fields.

Cable also says soil crusting has seen throughout parts of Michigan with heavier crusting found two weeks ago, but he says there hasn’t been pounding rain or rainfall totals that have been enough to cause significant damage.
