Harvest Weather Forecast: Warmer Temperatures Return, But Rain Returns Tuesday

Dry weather is here for harvest for the next 5 days with rain free conditions now through Tuesday. We see temps warming over that period and we will be quite mild Sunday through Tuesday. However, the window for field work closes for a time starting overnight Tuesday night.

A disturbance races across the Great Lakes overnight Tuesday night bringing scattered showers to most of Lower MI. The totals will not be big, only a few hundredths to .4”, with the biggest coming together in the Thumb. However, it will trigger a pause in field work. We should see sun re-emerge Wednesday afternoon and start the day Thursday.

Our next rain maker is still on track for Thursday. Clouds build quickly Thursday, and rain is here by Midday, continuing through the afternoon and overnight. Friday, we get a dry slot to work into the system in between the frontal passage of Thursday and the arrival of the slow moving upper low circulation later in the day. That low parks over us Friday night through Saturday and will bring a lot more clouds and a few hit and miss showers. All told, the initial front will bring .25”-.75” to 80% of the state, and then the wrap around triggers an additional few hundredths to few tenths through Saturday. Oh, and it gets much colder again as well. Temps behind this system will be as cold or colder than what we saw earlier this week.

While it is cold behind the system, we do look for sun to try and return late Saturday and especially Sunday/Monday to finish out the 10 day forecast period. However, even though we are rain free, drying will return to painfully slow rates for this period with evaporation almost non-existent. This means we will have trouble getting rid of the moisture that falls this week predominantly Thursday. The map at right is rain cumulative
potential for the Tuesday night through Saturday period.

Extended Period:

Rain comes back in the extended period for Wednesday the 17th, lingering through the 18th. This event brings .25”-.75” with 100% coverage for lower MI and the threat of wet snow for the UP. Lake effect can be seen for the 19th in western MI and the eastern UP, but the rest of the state sees clouds and sun. WE finish out the 11-16 day period with partly sunny skies in all areas through the 21st, but we remain cold.

Weeks 3 & 4:

Slightly above normal precipitation for week 3 while we dry out in week 4. Look for below normal temps in week 3 and only a small recovery to near normal in week 4. We definitely are seeing the warmth over the next 3-5 days as the last warm surge of the fall season.
