After being shuttered for nearly year, the MSU Dairy Store is back open as students return to East Lansing.
Connor McDougall started his position as manager a little over two weeks ago. While he wasn’t there when the store announced it would halt operations last September, he’s experienced the excitement of its return firsthand.
“We actually opened up these last two weekends—two weeks ago on Saturday and Sunday, and this last week we opened Saturday,” he says. “It was a soft open. We put a sign out front, and we still had a line out the door—people walking by, driving by and they said, ‘I had to hit the brakes really quick and turn in’ because they saw people outside with ice cream.”
McDougall says there was an expectation from MSU President Samuel Stanley and the Provost Office to start dishing the signature scoops once more.
“We’re gearing up to open up again this weekend for move-in weekend,” he says. “However, we probably won’t be able to be open until Saturday and Sunday and then planning on starting things back up Wednesday when classes start. Hopefully we’ll be back to having somewhat regular hours.”
As for supplies, they’re going through existing ice cream while the plant is getting ready to come back online. McDougall says they’re holding onto one of their most popular flavors—Izzo’s Malted Madness—until March. For the store’s hours, follow the MSU Dairy Store’s Facebook page.
