According to chief meteorologist Ryan Martin, the biggest problem for Michigan’s weather is its proximity to the lakes. Indiana and Ohio are safe from that precipitation, but in the Mitten, if the wind is coming from the Northwest or West, we’re going to see lake effect.
“Seeing [lake effect snow] often as we go through the weekend,” said Martin. “Some clouds off and on—we may not see a lot of moisture over the entirety of the state, but closer to the lakes you’re going to be seeing a chance for a little bit better moisture. We’ll see a bigger threat of precipitation as we go into early next week with our next frontal boundary arrival.”
The next cold front will work its way into the area Sunday night into Monday with significant cold air coming along.
“I think we could see snows on the order of a coating to several inches, just depends on where you’re at, but the best coverage is probably I-96 southward,” said Martin. “It’s done by Monday evening or mid-afternoon, but then we see much colder blast of air again behind that front that’s going to foster an additional round or two of lake effect snow or lake effect cloud cover.”
Looking into the extended forecast, Martin said we will see milder temperatures.
“Friday, Saturday into Sunday, I’m watching another frontal complex come in Nov. 17 through early morning hours of Monday the 18th that’s going to put down some moisture, maybe a mix of rain and snow across about 70 to 80 percent of Michigan,” said Martin. “Then we’re going to follow it up with a bigger threat of rain for the entirety of the Eastern Corn Belt on Wednesday the 20th that looks like it could have some rain or even thunderstorm action with it.”
